Every device needs a power source

Avoid touching devices with bare hands

Photograph everything you see

1. Document

Photographs

  • Start far away then move in closer.

  • The more photos the better.

  • Taking a video after photos may also be helpful.

2. Identify

  • Compare the device to similar surrounding objects.

  • Does it make sense where it's located at?

3. Notify

Contacting Law Enforcement

  • If you confirmed the device to be suspicious.

  • If you suspect criminal intent.

  • If you suspect illegal activity or safety concerns.

  • If the confirmed suspicious device is hard-wired.

Contacting the Rental Host

  • AFTER documenting the scene.

  • Do you believe the host is involved or a prior guest?

  • If you are still unsure if the device is a camera.

4. Act

If you can't confirm the device is a camera

  • Cover up the suspected lens (tape or opaque object).

  • Redirect object away from line-of-sight.

  • Notify rental host when checking out.

LocationTrackers

1. Document

Photographs

  • Start far away then move in closer.

  • The more photos the better.

  • If there's cables, try to follow them.

2. Identify

  • Is the device more clean than surrounding parts?

  • Does it come off easily?

  • Location trackers need a power source (battery or cable).

  • GPS trackers need to be near the outer edge for good signal.

Contacting Law Enforcement

3. Notify

  • If you confirmed the device to be confirmed suspicious.

  • If you suspect criminal intent.

  • If you suspect illegal activity or safety concerns. 

  • If the vehicle is a rental, contact the rental agent.

If you can't confirm the device is a location tracker.

4. Act

  • Remove the object if possible. 

  • Take the vehicle for inspection by your mechanic. 

  • Cover the object with two layers of aluminum foil and strong tape.
